What Is The Difference Between Thyroid-S, Thiroyd, and “T.R.”?

Update Mar 18, 2019 – Sadly the manufacturer has decided to discontinue T.R. effective immediately. T.R. is no longer available.

Updated Aug 28, 2015 to include information about “T.R.” by T. Man Pharma.

Several customers ask us what is the difference between these three products, so we made this page which we hope makes it more clear what you are buying. Well for starters, these are three different products manufactured by three different companies.

  • Thyroid-S is manufactured by Sriprasit Pharma.
  • Thiroyd is manufactured by Greater Pharma.
  • “T.R.” is manufactured by T. Man Pharma.

There are several major differences between Thyroid-S, Thiroyd, and T.R. which affect the price/performance/storage of these tablets. We sell all three products Thyroid-S, Thiroyd, and T.R. and they all excellent products. However, Thyroid-S is a little more expensive, and there are some storage and performance differences, and we try to explain these differences below.

Filler Differences: Thyroid-S uses a filler which binds the active hormones more strongly than Thiroyd. We know this because we used a lab to measure the concentrations of hormones in both types of tablets. The results showed that Thyroid-S needed an extra step of solvent extraction to release all the hormones for correct measurement. We believe this will result in more stable tablet storage and a slower release of hormones after swallowing. Thiroyd dissolves easily and well, Thyroid-S is chaukier and is more difficult to dissolve. Click HERE to see our post detailing the extra step needed to release the active ingredients of Thyroid-S (fascinating stuff). We currently don’t have infomation about the fillers in T.R., we have requested it from the manufacturers, and we will update this post if we get it.

Tablet Color:

  • Thyroid-S tablet is a light brown color and shiny.
  • Thiryod tablet is white and matte finish.
  • T.R. is a pink tablet with sugar coating.

All tablets are white or off-white inside. Here is a picture I made showing cross sections of all three tablets.

Cross section view of Thyroid-S, Thiroyd, and T.R. tablets

Cross section view of Thyroid-S, Thiroyd, and T.R. tablets

  • Thyroid-S is a coated tablet.
  • Thiroyd is uncoated.
  • T.R. has a sugar coating (pink).

Tablet Anti-Counterfeiting: The coating on Thyroid-S tablets is thin and distinctive and not easily duplicated by counterfeiters. Thiryod tablets are white and with no distinctive features and are more easily counterfeited. The sugar coating on T.R. is a distinctive pink color.

Packaging: (Please Note: This discussion on packaging is referring to the full bottle 1,000 tablets packaging. The small packs, ie. 30-250 tablets, are packed in sealed, re-closeable, moisture barrier bags as described in the product listings. The bottle packaging is not available in tablet sizes less than 1,000 tablets.)

  • Thyroid-S is packaged in a brown glass bottle with metal cap, and with moisture absorber inside, and cotton to fill the extra space in the bottle. The glass bottle is inside a cardboard box with an outer shrink wrap which functions as the security seal.
  • Thiroyd is packaged in a white plastic bottle, and the tablets are sealed inside a plastic bag with moisture absorber inside. The plastic bottle has an outer shrink wrap which functions as the security seal.
  • T.R. is packaged in a plastic bottle and includes a heat shrink outer plastic wrap which functions as the security seal.. I was pleasantly surprised upon opening my first bottle of T.R. to find inside the bottle, the tablets are packaged in two sealed moisture barrier bags of 500 tablets each. Wonderful idea. It means you can open one at a time and keep the second one sealed until needed. Here’s a photo:
T.R. Sealed Moisture Barrier Bags (500 tablets each bag)

Factors affecting cost: The glass bottle and metal cap of Thyroid-S packaging is more expensive to produce. Because the glass bottle is substantially heavier, it is more expensive to ship also. Shipping costs are approximately US$3 more for Thyroid-S than Thyroid/T.R.. The Thyroid-S and T.R. tablets are coated, which is a more expensive process than uncoated tablets.

Factors affecting storage: The thyroglobulin in Natural Desiccated Thyroid is quite stable for long periods if stored correctly (cold, dry, and dark). Thyroid-S is packaged in a dark glass bottle, which protects the tablets from moisture, oxygen, and light. Thiroyd and T.R. are packaged in a white plastic bottle, which does not block moisture, oxygen, and light as well. However, T.R. does include two individual moisture barrier bags of 500 tablets each bag. Thyroid-S and T.R. are coated tablets, which protect the active hormones better from moisture and oxygen than an un-coated tablet like Thiroyd. Thyroid-S fillers bind the active hormones more strongly than Thiroyd. The sugar coating on T.R. and moisture barrier bag sealing contribut to it’s four year expiration date.

Product Life:

  • Thyroid-S: The product lifetime of Thyroid-S is three years from date of manufacture.
  • Thiroyd: The product lifetime of Thiroyd is three years from date of manufacture.
  • T.R.:  The product lifetime of T.R. is four years from date of manufacture.

  2. Edit: We are thrilled to announce that this customer has received their order in full. I recommended to remove her comment and she agreed. So glad to put this behind us.

  3. I’d be interested in comments and feedback from anyone having tried any or all of the Thai NDT brands! There is so much conflicting information out there and all three brands seem to have their fans. Thanks!

    • If this helps: I have been using Thyroid-S for several months. I know how much I should take from my labs. It works! I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos 20 years and have previously taken levothyroxin T4. It worked fairly well, but after switching to NDT I feel so much better. I have Naturethroid but it is still touch and go with production and Armour is just too expensive. So I tried the Thai route. I must say that it works. I get the pensive looks and stairs from my pharmacist when I tell him that I am ordering on my own from an overseas lab, but what the hell ! The US production codes and restrictions are killing the NDT market via cost and availability. I will continue to use Thyroid-S until I am able to get Naturethroid again. Good Luck with it all!

  4. Hello everyone can you please help I’m about to change from thyroid s to TR because of short supplys. Does anyone know is it a straight swap I’ve been on 5 thyroid s for a couple of years now. Thank you for any information.

    • Sorry, not sure if you still need a reply or sorted it out anyway…?

I have tried both brands and, although they contain the same amount of hormones (9 mcg of T3, 38 mcg of T4) per grain, I could not just switch from one to the other. On Thyroid-S, I feel stable all day long. On the same dose of TR, I felt jittery, with energy levels going up and down (I take NDT once a day, in the morning, as I find that more convenient than multi dosing; however, Thyroid-S is the only brand so far that I have been able to take once a day without feeling jittery…).

May I ask why you wanted to switch from Thyroid-S to TR?

  5. I think I will try the Thyroid S. Ive been on nature throid and the formula has changed and im going hypo bad and feeling like im lower than low. Completely exhausted all the time.

I just want to feel better. I dont know why the meds keep changing. First it was,Armour and then I switched to Nature Throid. Then about a year of hard to get med and now theyve started producing. Im getting hypo again.

I will definately try it. I want my life BACK!

  6. Tiffany,

Strangely enough, I seem to require very high doses of any kind of NDT containing cellulose (which I prefer as, strangely enough, they seem to absorb more slowly than pills without cellulose, such as Erfa, which seem to absorb too quickly and then the effect quickly wears off, which means I have to multi dose, whereas Thyroid-S can be taken once daily). But I seem to need 7 grains of either Thyroid-S or Armour to get my FT4 levels midrange and my FT3 levels around 3.2 (ref for my lab: 1.7-3.7). That is where I feel good, no hypo or hyper symptoms. TSH completely suppressed but I understand that is irrelevant when on drugs containing T3.
However, without being able to explain why, I feel better on Thyroid-S than on Armour, and I think Armour contains even more cellulose than TS.

    • Not me. Naturethroid and thyroid-S dosing are the same for me. Thyroid-S is awesome. Naturethroid is difficult to acquire.

  7. To Carmen and any others who are just starting or are switching to a NDT like Thyroid S or any others…U must start at 1/2 grain (must cut with knife or pill cutter) and stay on that dose for at least 1 week. Then start to raise by 1/2 grain and with each raise allow at least 1 week…some people need 2 weeks. You keep raising until your hypothyroid symptoms start to end.
You need to go this slow to allow your body to adjust to the T3. Also, most people find they do better by splitting their daily dose and taking twice a day instead of just once a day. You are spreading the T3 out which is what the body needs for energy and metabolism.
It took me a number of months to get to the dose I feel the best on which is 5 grains. I take 3 in very early morning and 2 around 3pm. You must take at least 1 hr before eating or drinking anything and at least 2 hrs after eating anything. Take with glass of water.
I took levothyroxine for years and was never well…gained weight on it. I have now been able to lose weight and feel much better on Thyroid S. I can’t speak about other brand since i have only taken this one.
There are a number of sites you can find to help you manage your hypothyroidism with natural dessicated thyroid. The best book and website is “Stop The Thyroid Madness”

  8. I went from 25mcg levo to .5 grain Thiroyd, but felt needed more. I am now on 2 to 2.5 grains a day. If I have a stressful day or its cold I increase by half a grain. I do take 1 grain early morning, 1 grain late morning ish and maybe half late aft early eve. I find this works well. I do have antibodies although my doctor says we all have antibodies, others have told me I have Hashimotos, I would rather believe others with hypothyroid than doctors who only treat the symptoms not the cause! Is a slow death a symptom, bit late then! My test results are low T4 but good T3 and very low TSH 0.01 which alarms the doctors. I feel so much better now. I do take supplements to support the thyroid and try and stay off gluten as much as I can. I heard celery juice every morning is good for the gut.

  9. I was taking Thiroyd for a long time, it was helping perfectly however since my last order I feel it’s not the same, maybe they have change ingredients in thiroyd.

  10. I’m so glad i found this site ! I had a partial thyroidectomy years ago, i went on synthroid for a while, did nothing.Did own research, insisted i be put on Armour.worked great, enough so tht i gradually was weaned off.but gradually my body showed signs of not producing enough hormones again..all the classics, exhaustion, even heavier periods, forehead hairloss, cold when i used to wear tshirts in Dec,no sleep but always sleepy, hooded eyelids, depression, etc.you all know the litany..lol.But my Dr is old school, only did standard tests,no adrenal tests,no T3/4 and since tests put me right on that outdated dreaded “Normal” line, refused to give me meds again.Since i also have a severe rare nerve disorder, dealing with tht while my thyroid was out of whack literally was killing me.Coming here i not only found out i can get meds in Canada or Thailand without a RX,and all the differences in my choices on them.Plus the difference is cost is unbelievable. .here one month costs me almost $30,instead a thousand pills from Thailand is about $80,thats a huge difference too on a fixed, very low income.I was SO glad to see so many happy customers on the ones from Thailand, especially.Hopefully the 2 most prevalent search engine online pharmacies that come up are legit, they seemed to be.But if anyone has any to recommend OR avoid, that’d be great too.Since i’m a jewelry designer, where fraud is rampant on anything gemstone/gold/silver related from Thailand,i was glad to see it’s not the same with meds. You all here probably saved my life.Thank You so much ~Blessed Be~

  11. hi i was taking naturethroid and my insurance no longer covers it. how is throid-s compared to nature-throid. i was taking 1 grain a day. i was doing very well on nature-thyroid. do you carry nature-thyroid if not how much of thyroid-s should i take compared to 1 grain of nature-throid. thanks.

    • I’ve taken both. For me…they are equivalent. I am currently only using Thyroid-S. Naturethroid is having a lousy time getting production levels back up and stabilized.

  12. I was on levothyroxine for over a year, did not really get better, would get a few months where I was reasonable and then go under again. Feeling exhausted when doing anything physical, unable teo hoover the carpet unless I take ages over it etc. Also the headaches came back with a vengeance. Would get unable to sleep and much more. Switched to thiroyd and found the first month was very good, felt perfect, then gradually went downhill again. So now what? Would be good to hear from anyone who understands and would like to talk about similar experiences.

  13. I bought a tub of both Thyroid-S and Thiroyd but have only tried the Thiroyd so far it works very well on my blood test my FT3 was way too high ( I have had my thyroid gland removed so it’s all coming from the tablets ) oddly my T4 levels were within normal range.

I was a poor responder to T4 needing 300mcg a day to get a normal TSH and other readings.

    • That is exactly how it was for me…I needed 300 mcg of T4 daily just to feel human; yet, my FT3 levels were never higher than midrange.

I have been on Thyroid-S for the past year and feel good on it, but when my FT4 levels are midrange (as they are supposed to be on NDT, as far as I know), my FT3 levels are out of range; it seems very difficult to end up with midrange FT4 levels along with FT3 levels close to the upper normal range, yet in range (isn’t that what you should aim for when on meds containing both T3 and T4)? I did add another grain of Thyroid-S and felt improvement; my FT4 levels ended up midrange, but FT3 levels were way over range. I don’t know if it’s possible to split the pills with a pill cutter…? Won’t that affect the coating and the slow-release function…? The only thing I find problematic when it comes to Thai NDT is that pills only exist in one strength.

      • Thyroid-S is broken down more slowly than Thiroyd. Some people cannot handle a lot of T3 when transitioning from Synthetic T4. I was one. You may have to lower dose by a half grain and live with that for a few months. Let the the body get used to the direct T3. You may try adding a half grain after that. I was on Synthetic for 20 years and, it wasn’t a pretty picture when I switched to NDT. My hypo raged back when FT3 numbers were 3.9 and FT4 was mid-range. Take a few months to get used to the T4/T3 combo. GL

  14. I’ve been taking Thiroyd for a good few years now, after many years of suffering at the hands of uneducated endos and dreadful Levothyroxine tablets, and managed to get my life back to a level of “normal” I hadn’t enjoyed for almost a decade (I was slowly getting worse, and feeling like the walking dead prior to taking the leap to NDT).

I’ve been getting my NDT from Peter G. for a few years now, and recently decided to try the pink T.R. tablets – five weeks in, and my old symptoms have come back to bite me on the butt – my tiredness levels have increased tenfold, and hair loss is noticeable too – so I guess it’s back to Thiroyd for me – thankfully I have a bottle of 1,000 stashed away, so back on them tomorrow. Sorry, Peter G., but it’s a thumbs down from me, re: T.R.!

Apart from that, I can highly recommend Thiroyd, and I’ve never had reason to believe the pills being supplied were counterfeit.

  15. I just ordered Thiroid and I have been taking Armour 60 mg and was bumped to 90 mg with no success in relief of symptoms. I wondered how much of Thiroid I should take daily and how often? Thank you as a mother of 5 I’m doing my best on researching this but its daunting.

    • A mother of 5 should be more concerned about adrenal exhaustion. That greatly effects the effectiveness of exogenous thyroid hormones “Stop the Thyroid Madness” is an awesome thyroid reference.

  16. i received thyroid-s product from , but i’m worry because the pills are completely white… are they genuine ?

  17. i was under the impression is thyroid-s is like armour, and thiroyd like erfa hormone-wise; that is, that each 60 mg pill of thyroid-s contains 9 mcg of t3 and 38 mcg of t4, and each 60 mg pill of thiroyd contains 8 mcg of t3 and 35 mcg of t4?

i would be tempted to try out thyroid-s; however, i am not too crazy about the long list of fillers and binders..has anyone experienced any problems with those fillers, such as aluminium, or are we talking about so tiny amounts that they are not a problem, even if you take them every day?

  18. Hello, I have tried both the Thyroid S and the Thiroid. My body didn’t want to break down or absorb the Thiroid, I got really hypo on it. So I switched back to Thyroid S but it seems to be too much t3 for me or not enough t4. Has anyone tried the new T.R.? Are there any reviews or testimonies from people who have tried that one?

    • Hi Vanessa I think I have the same problem, I started thiroid and my T4 has gone up from10.00 to 13.5. I really don’t want to go back to thyroxine should I spend more money on thyroid s ?

  19. Hi there. I’m on Armour and has more fillers than ever. I’m on 90mg which is one grain. I feel it’s time to change. What is the dosage that is equal to Armour 90mg ? Thank you

    • Hi Vanessa thank you for replying my Thyroid s just arrived in the post yesterday so I am starting today. I will see how I get on and hopefully I will be feeling like a more normal version of myself soon enough xxx

  20. Sorry meant to say not doing a damn thing 🐸 also does anyone else get shoulder or hip pain? And if so did taking any of the above did it help in anyway?

    • I used to get hip pain and have had shoulder pain. I am just recently 60 years. Still have issues with my left thumb. Arthritic type pain and stiffness…keeping me from crocheting for months. And that thumb is now weaker than the other hand/thumb.

All/part was from edema. Now with nearly two months of a regular regimen of taking 1/2 tablet of Thiroyd AM and PM and a at bedtime a nice glob of Progest-E Complex from Kenogen (Ray Peat’s progesterone in Vit E oil). I don’t have edema issues anymore. The thiroyd I just bite in half and set aside the one half for the PM. I chew them…or as some would say, take it sublingually…ha!.

I also for about the same length of time I’ve been making a daily (or twice a day) hot drink of Bragg’s vinegar…a splash, water and sugar to taste I’ve seemed to turn the corner on gut issues. Sometimes I use apple juice or cider and sometimes add a dry packet of Alpine Spiced Apple Cider. The vinegar has seemed to help with the edema as well.

See jcrow.com and Dr. D.C. Jarvis regarding vinegar and arthritis in humans and animals. Get one or both of his books.

I can’t miss a day though, or the gut issues return. I plan to try my hand at making my own Kimchee/Sauerkraut. One of our sons makes it all the time. A no brainer creation.

I’m hoping the thumb will self correct soon. I once had (12 years ago) the left shoulder go frozen for over a year, and a bunch of magnesium, other minerals, vitamins, progesterone, pregnenolone, thyroid unfroze it within a week. (I was treating myself for racing heart I had at the time.) Reached above my head and surprised myself.

OK, I’ve been on this lecturn long enough. Ha!

  21. Has anyone tried thyroid-s or thiroid? as I am unsure of which one to purchase any feedback would be great as the levothyroxine is not doing a damp thing

    • Hi I have tried both and my body didn’t breakdown or absorb the thiroid I got very hypo on it and the thyroid s I like but my t4 stays on the low end of normal but when I add more it give me too much t3 for me. It’s all so personal. Every person is different. You really just have to try them for yourself to see what you body does best with. My advice is try both. One at a time. Stay on one for at least 6 weeks and have blood work done. I waited too long to check my levels. Maybe the first one you try will do the trick. Best wishes!

    • Try Thiroid. It’s the first product I’ve ever used that actually worked and got my T3 up in the normal range. It has a slight fruity flavor, if you like to dissolve the tablets under your tongue or chew them. I am really happy with the product and dealing with Peter & his team: I have been buying Thiroid from them for years.

  22. Hi Maria ; The sugar coating is quite thin, it is a very effective humidity sealant, and basically quite harmless in the amounts under discussion. But yes each of us must decide which tablets are the most appropriate for us. Take care now, Peter G.

  23. I’m curious about the new tablets – what about the sugar coating for those who no longer eat processed sugar? Will it affect us in any way?

  24. @Miles, this is excellent info. If you would happen to have a reference link for this, it would be outstanding. Please send to me privately as on “Contact Us” page, as you won’t be able to post any links here, as we have disabled anything that looks like a “link” in comments due to too many spam postings.

We also discuss this in our Knowledge Base, including references for storage at well below freezing temperatures:
Would freezing my product make it last longer?

  25. Desiccated thyroid was U.S. government tested for shelf life decades ago. The samples were kept in a cool dry place. The test was terminated after 17 years. There was no measurable loss of any of the iodine, T-1,2,3,4. or calcitonin. Storage life for these products should be indefinite.

  26. Hi Carla, thanks for your comment and gently recommend that you study first, the information is out there and readily available, and please ask your questions on the public forums, which we should all be subscribed to, right Ma’am? The signup boxes are in the right column of this page, lots of good people there to help you, we are not doctors, and we have no association with these groups or any other entity.

  27. Hi there, I’m hypothyroid & have been for many years however I’ve never found anything that truly addresses my symptoms I’ve recently purchased Thyroid S so I’m hoping it will enable my body to turn things around I’m just very unsure of what dosage to take & how to gauge it?
    Regards Carla

  28. Hi Pat, Very sorry about that. Adverse reactions with these products are very, very rare, but they do happen, and they happen with the leading name brand products as well. This information can be validated by browsing the public forums. In the event of an adverse reation, stop taking the product immediately, and we do offer 100% satisfaction guarantee for any cases such as this. I agree with you that the manufacturers should be more forthcoming with this important information. Take care now, Peter G.

  29. That information is not much use if your allergic to certain chemicals, fillers ,coatings or colourings

I need to know the full facts on exactly what is in the tablets as Thiroid aeems to have caused a nasty rash whereas thyroid-s did not

    • hi pat,
i was severely allergic to yellow forms of t3, hives, rash, itchy palms, itchy eyelids etc..
however, the for me, the white pills, (thiroyd greater pharma) is what is use and have had no reaction to, i hope this helps
      kathy
